liam & tiger, scarlet & fire -- if you two are meeting head on with this show, then i KNOW it's gooood..... and what do i know, but for once, i knew it was good too....

SOMEHOW, JERRY is in very sweet voice on Bird Song, Scarlet>Fire and Wharf Rat -- his backups on BOB's don't sound great, but his leads are nice and EXPRESSIVE and full of emotion, and in Key and On time..... he never goes "fire, fire fire Fire on the Mou-anntain" like he did when he was REALLY feelin' it, but this is an endearing performance -- swell feeling!

AND BRENT! sounds just great on the big GET UP AND FLY AWAY chorus in wharf rat...

here's the first quickest example of a Fire i could find where Jerry is really giving you some VERY DEEP emotion.... of course here he has the benefit of Donna, who, here in 1979 had an AMAZING working rapport with jerry, and THEY JUST GROOVE together on this FIRE CHORUS -- in fact -- i am feeling it a little too much right now and need to go chill..... LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK PEOPLE:

FEBRUARY 3, 1979

another HOT FIRE, April, 16, 1978.... jerry just gives it up on the vocal..... whoa momma!

April 24, 1978

wait a minute, is there a bad version?.... come on people, how many times did jerry say, "let it burn, let it burn, let it burn..."? cue it up at 8 MINUTES, 30 SECONDS west of the time your face started to slide off....

yes, i am having trouble now, this is the thing here, i think maybe this was as special as it might have seemed, and certainly does now, JERR did not do FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN because he couldn't think of another song, IT SEEMS, he mostly, REALLY, really wanted to play the jam if he did it:

(so, there are gifts...)

May 16, 1978

on the big CHORUS at 6:30, our hero really starts to dig in, and offers up some real emotion.... JERRY could really PUT IT into his vocals when he was feelin' it.... this is the kind of thing that makes me LOVE people i only know but through music.....

after the song's inception in 77, they seemed to gradually slow it down.... a wonderful, simmering slow version was played many a nite, here's one:

December 16, 1978 -- more face melt.

ok, i will leave it at DECEMBER 1978 for now, the night before one of their most memorable, well documented shows, they unleashed an UNDER-RATED MONSTER of a show,

DECEMBER 30, 1978.

there is a certain thing about BOBBY playing SLIDE among you older tour heads -- and while i recognize the few times i hear that it was HORRIBLE, in 1978, BOBBY played some really nice stuff with the slide on FIRE! ... cheers to BOBBY!!! (a few of the version i have linked have some nice work from bob on the slide on 'em)

all great calls on those -78 versions, He's Live...I would add 4/8/78 to that list.

Liam--this is one sweet '82 version...I'm glad I stuck w/it...the first 45 secs. of the scarlet is lousy sound til the SBD kicks in...nice transition to this one.

Another sweet (and underappreciated '82 is 9/11/82):

no flubs in either tune...very nice transition and great "landing" back into scarlet coda.

cheers to you and caspers..... i really got lost in this tune the other night and was really FEELING the versions i linked....

glad you guys saw fit to throw up a FLYER on the post -- i still feel it too.... like any second i could get back to that "Fire Space"...... it is ONE OF THE SONGS that provided a Deep Gateway in the post 74 years.... Mr Garcia gave it up many a night on the Scarlet>Fire duo and there is no limit to it for me right now.....

cheers fellows!
